My responsibilities included mapping data flows to produce a record of processing activities and establishing the lawful basis for processing. Privacy notices, data protection policies, such as subject access requests, data protection impact assessments and consent management processes were analysed and updated. I oversaw the design and delivery of a staff training programme and ongoing data protection awareness updates to 200+ staff at 5 locations. Reviewing and negotiating data protection clauses for income and expenditure contracts meant I had to work closely with project teams, suppliers, key customers such as NHS England, Dept of Health & Social Care and Dept of Education and their information governance teams. My role included working with the IT team to ensure adequate technical protection I targeted achieving a “Cyber Essentials” accreditation, which covers system security (including use of encryption, two factor authentication, password and access control policies), firewall management and anti-virus software.. Unfortunately The Confederation suffered a data breach, early on in the project. As data protection lead I managed the breach process and subsequent dealings with the senior management team, data subjects and Information Commissioners Office. My final deliverable was the deployment of an ongoing data governance process that will maintain the gains made from the project. To make the project a success I had to demonstrate effective project, interpersonal and communication skills to gain the confidence of the executive, senior management team and staff. Show less

Working with the Compliance, Security and Group General Council I had to agree the scope, define, fund and manage the programme that would deliver the agreed risk along with an ongoing Governance structure. The programme covered both BTGS’ Customer, Supplier and Employee systems and processes and had a budget of £2m.My responsibilities included mapping process data and data flows across the 400+ global system estate and establishing the basis for processing. The system review covered assessing and remediating system security (including use of encryption, two factor authentication, password and access control policies) and recording the findings. A key area of this work involved analysing and uplifting portfolio, bespoke customer and supplier contracts, where BTGS was a data processor. Where necessary full Data Privacy Impact Assessments were undertaken for the high risk categories of data and processes. The majority of the programme involved teams based in UK or EU but also had to involve the Americas and AMEA teams who had responsibility for customer contracts that involved processing activities in the EEA and were thus impacted by GDPR.A key deliverable of the programme was educating both senior managers and operational teams about their accountabilities and responsibilities. This had to be done against a backdrop of other operational pressures and involved developing a communications plan that included webinars, individual briefings and linked to BTGS’ core communication mechanisms. The programme concluded with me deploying a governance process into the business that would guarantee ongoing Privacy by Design, Supplier Assurance, DSAR and Incident Management processes were operational.
