I am curious about the formation of orchestras. What made the culture of a particular place capable of supporting certain types of these institutions? Specifically, what made the years 1880 to 1920 so important in the development of orchestras in the world during this time, with the formation of the major professional ensembles? How can fine art institutions be made more relevant to their communities and continue to be important to them as well, especially in today’s ever-changing world? My research has touched upon many of these institutions in Boston and Auckland and why these ensembles are so important to the cities themselves.
