Thesis: "Advanced instrumentation for gravitational-wave research"PhD research for large-scale gravitational wave detectors as part of the LIGO-Virgo Collaboration. My research is focused on four topics: 1) hydrogen embrittlement in ultra-low creep (<1 nm/day) high strength steels (>2 GPa); 2) the development and characterization of a ribbon gravity gradiometer; 3) realization of a table-top suspended laser interferometer include Fabry-Perot cavities mimicking a large scale gravitational waves observatory for the development of alternative sensors and control strategies; 4) the commissioning of the Advanced Virgo plus (Adv+) filter cavity with the ultimate goal to operate the observatory behind the quantum noise limit.
