Northern operates the largest rail passenger franchise in the UKand delivers rural, urban and inter-urban services across the North of England.In this role I lead the development and planning of all Northern’s train services and in partnership with Network Rail identifiy and support the development of infrastructure enhancements to the network. Through Northerns’ two Controls my team manages the real time delivery of Northern’s 2,500 train services each day and ensures effective deployment of traincrew and unit resources. I am also responsible for the performance strategy of the business and lead on the development of Joint Performance Improvement Plans along with Network Rail and other industry partners.

Operations Director of the rail passenger franchise that operated rural, urban and inter-urban services, across Yorkshire and the North East of England. Responsible for the planning and daily delivery of over 1200 trains per day through 1400 traincrew, 100 managers and 250 support staff. Responsible for the train planning team that develops andplans the timetable, the Control Centre that manages the minute by minute delivery of train services each day and the performance team that monitors and reports on operational performance of the train service. Led the development and delivery of traincrew management and deployment, including depot strategies, establishment setting andmodifications to traincrew conditions of service. Promoted consistency across the business inthe application of traincrew management and standards.

Lead the operational teams that support the delivery of 1400 trains each day across the North of England. Head of Operations for the business responsible for the development of traincrew and operational standards.

Leeds 1st was a three year, £260M project to enhance and renew the railway infrastructure around the Leeds Station area. It included the building of two additional lines to the western approaches, complete remodelling and re-signalling, additional station platforms and a new station roof covering all seventeen platforms.Key responsibilities included:o Liaison with all TOCs and FOCs on all project implementation issueso Development of operational solutions for construction accesso Management and delivery of the operational planning process for the projecto Provision of operational advice to the project teamo Management of the public consultation activities with PTEs and RPCso Management of all Public Relations activities for the projecto Development of the operational requirements for the new signalling control centreo Production of the ARS specification and delivery of signallers training

Management of design and construction activities, for a range of signalling projects. Responsible for the writing of project specifications, ensuring compliance with standards andadherence to programme through the various project stages to completion and hand-back.Projects included three significant re-signalling schemes at Worksop, Castleford and Barnsley, an AWS programme covering over 300 route miles and a SPAD mitigation programme.

Seconded to Railtrack, Major Projects Division.

Responsible for planning, supervision and co-ordination of all signalling site activities of contractors BR staff and other departments. Key duties included Signal Sighting, site surveys, installation and Possession management; and the supervision of cable trains including management of wagons, plant, locomotive power and train crew.

Management of signalling system design and development contracts. Provision of SSI and IECC technical support.

Structured training programme covering all aspects of Signal and Telecoms Engineering on British Rail, including installation, design, maintenance and management systems.
