The primary development areas were the US, Canada, MENA and the Caribbean with placements being on a direct, surplus lines or reinsurance basis. The international construction business covered a broad spectrum of project types and my experience includes US and Canadian house builders, conventional power plants (gas and coal), LNG and Floating Storage Regasification Units, road and rail tunnels (TBM and drill & blast), high rise buildings, gas/oil pipelines, onshore wind farms, solar farms, deep sea ports and hydroelectric power plants. A high proportion of the projects I dealt with had high natural catastrophe exposures, hence London market involvement.Securing orders on these types of projects requires a broad general knowledge of a varied range of projects, technologies and associated risks, along with an understanding of what underwriting information is required for a particular type of project in a particular region or territory. This includes geographical, seismic, seasonal and political data, in addition to the technical project information, details of which need to be presented quickly to the market, ahead of potential competing brokers. Market relationships, based on integrity and trust, are critical for success and growth, particularly in the current construction market where there is significant contraction.Aside from numerous owner and contractor controlled projects, in 2018 I finalised a US Builders Risks Facility for Lockton US offices to access, which included $40m capacity for wood frame projects in California. Placing Broker/Account Executive in the International Construction Team at AJG. Core activities were placement of reinsurance, plus arrangement of fronting for direct client business. Regions involved in were the Middle East, North Africa, the Caribbean and Europe. Additionally, I also had a growing book of operational European onshore renewable energy business, primarily wind and solar, with an additional pipeline of new project construction.
