Sustaining Engineer, Mechanical

Efi

• The economy tanked, the corporation restructured heavily & I was re-assigned to the sustainingengineering department because of my extensive knowledge of the existing released products. As efi’s mechanical engineer for sustaining of existing products, I regularly interfaced with all departments & personal within the company as well as customers & field engineers directly to gather information about specific system problems, complaints or design issues. The scope of this position required that I solve any problem that arose including design, manufacturability (In house & fabricator), high failure rates, end of life components etc. These issues often required a cross functional effort between electrical, mechanical & software disciplines within the sustaining department for the final solution of a given problem. Sustaining an existing product in many ways is more challenging than designing from scratch as retrofitting systems in the field were required to be drop in, no drill installations. “KISS” was mandatory in all design releases to production & the field. This approach required a level of creativity that was many times employed into new product development by the core development team due to it’s simplistic design solve of complex problems. ECO’s were a regular part of sustaining’s daily life requiring extensive communications for dispositions of old rev parts, phase ins, etc.

Feb 2001 - Jul 2013

Assiciate Engineer, Mechanical

Efi|Vutek

Initial responsibilities were simple, designing brackets, drawing updates & solving manufacturing design issues. This quickly led to assuming a key roll in new product development of the DS 1000 whereas I developed flatbed media transport system that was powered by a liner servo system that traveled @ 60 inches per second. The frame was constructed from .25” wall structural steel. The media transport table was unique in design as it four separate vacuum zones controlled by a poppet valving system as well as pop up media registration pins that were pneumatically powered. The tables construction was a honey combed laminated design with .06” top & bottom t6061 plate 5’x8’x2” flat to.005”. The vacuum was generated by twin 5hp regenerative pumps which pulled 480cfm each. These pumps provided enough vacuum to hold no less than 1.5psi anywhere on the entire surface of the completely open vacuum table. The entire transport system is being reviewed for patent protection even though the project was suspended. I created all of the drawings for all of the designs & details of the above. This included all mechanical drawings(GD&T), pneumatic diagrams, system block diagrams, cable & harness drawings, assembly documentation including exploded view prints, BOM’s entered into the MRP system, etc, etc. I personally built all of the prototype systems to insure manufacturability. When the project went to beta, I supported the manufacturing team throughout the entire build through completion of this subsystem.

Manufacturing Engineer

Vutek

Utilize the skills & processes developed from 2002-2006 (noted below). This includes but isn’t limited to the following; Create & maintain new and existing BOM’s, define & maintain Manufacturing processes & process sheets, work w/ key production & materials personnel, support for all levels of Manufacturing, manage entire new product projects, work w/ the core design team on existing & new product design challenges, solve day to day Manufacturing problems of any type.

Manufacturing Engineering Technician

Vutek

2001-2002, Work w/ all levels of assembly personnel in the development of assembly tooling & Fixtures, Process improvement & definition as well as writing assembly process sheets. Aid Manufacturing with new product introduction when delivered from Design Engineering. This included red lining mechanical as well as electrical drawings & schematics for manufacturing clarity after initial system debug.2002 - 2006, Reassigned as Manufacturing’s representative for New Product Introduction. While in this role, I personally built the prototype systems including development of initial BOM’s & procedures while recommending design changes for manufacturability, cost reduction & system reliability to the design team. After the 1st systems were completed, I worked to introduce the new products to the manufacturing team. This team included key manufacturing personnel from all levels of manufacturing from procurement of parts to the shipment of the finished system to the customer. All of these activities included training on a one on one basis in each area of focus. A complete & interment knowledge of the entire design & manufacturing process is required to function in this role. This included working with vendors for easier manufacturability (cost reduction) & potential alternative off the shelf components (cost reduction, reliability & availability). I also played a key role in the development of the commercialized product process that defines the conception to death life cycle of any products offered by VUTEk. This included the definition of the process for transferring data from the design group to Manufacturing so Manufacturing could be self sustaining after full commercial release. This free’ed up more of Engineering’s time for the development of the next new product. As the products became more complex & the manufacturing team grew is size, the need for better product assembly procedures arose. This is now the standard method for process sheet generation within VUTEk.
