Brickz, an invention of Natural Soil Improvement, are small cubes of organic material impregnated with the fungus mycorrhiza and possibly with plant seeds. The mycorrhiza supports and speeds up the growth of the plants, locks in heavy metals en generates a better soil structure. The river sediment itself, often being clay, contains essential elements for a healthy and resilient soil.The Brickz can be placed on the degraded land, where they will fall apart after rain and start restoring the soil. Brickz can be used for afforestation, reforestation and agriculture.

Oppla is a European knowledge marketplace; a place where the latest thinking on ecosystem services, natural capital and nature-based solutions is brought together. Over 60 universities, research institutes, agencies and enterprises created Oppla and are contributing to Oppla as part of a joint activity between the OPERAs and OpenNESS projects, funded by the European Commission FP7 Programme. I stood at the cradle of Oppla and was its first general manager and chairman of the Management Board. In that position, I contributed to the establishment of Oppla, to the operational set up, the development and management of projects, and organisation of seminars, including for businesses

The Research Programme Biodiversity Works involved stakeholders in scientific research into the protection of Dutch wildlife. Interactions between flora, fauna and microorganisms but also climate change, spatial scarcity and the arrival of exotic species were all factors that influence ecosystems and services that nature provides us with. A better understanding of these factors contributes to a balanced nature conservation policy and well-considered investments to protect vital ecosystems. The Research Programme Biodiversity Works has emerged from the like-named policy programme that was signed by several government ministries. The research programme developed knowledge to enable policy questions to be answered. The Programme was coordinated by a steering committee, which received advice from a Programma commitee and an international assessment committee. I was chairman of the steering commitee, which decided on allocation of funds and was in charge of the quality control.

The Land & Sea Group is an international not-for-profit expertise clustering of land- and sea-networks and was esblished by (now former) ECNC-European Centre for Nature Conservation, the Coastal & Marine Union (EUCC) and the Mediterranean Centre. As from 1 July 2010 the Large Herbivore Network integrated into the ECNC Group. ECNC Land & Sea Group EEIG is the formal umbrella of the ECNC Group, based on a European Economic Interest Grouping (EEIG). The Land & Sea Group contributed or contributes to projects and initiatives such as Healthy Seas - a journey from waste to wear, QualityDestination, Bojanatour - integrated coastal zone management, and Green Tourism impetus. The Land & Sea Group implemented together with Stichting Noordzee the project "Noordzee Nettenvrij". I was end-responsible for the strategic and operational aspects of the Land & Sea Group as part of the Management Team and I was the first chief executive of the Group. I was leading the process of the establishment of the Group and the drafting of the business plan. Also, I was in charge or directly involved in the Group's projects and activities.

Responsible for the strategic and operational aspects of ECNC-European Centre for Nature Conservation including the reporting to the Board of Governors of ECNC. ECNC existed for 25 years.ECNC was an independent not-for-profit European Expertise Centre for Biodiversity and Sustainability and leads projects and initiatives in the field of Nature and Society, Business and Biodiversity, Green infrastructure, Ecosystem Services and Biodiversity Assessment, Ecosystem and Species Management and Policy Support. ECNC had 56 network partners in 29 European countries, and executed a wide number of projects, and coordinated international networks such as the European Learning Network for Regions, the European Learning Network for Functional Biodiversity (FAB) and the Large Herbivore Network. I was the Executive Director and Secretary of the Board for more than 21 years. I was involved in most of the projects of ECNC, and end-responsible for all substance and daily management activities and for the reporting to the Board.

The ETC/BD is an international consortium working with the European Environment Agency under a framework partnership agreement. The main tasks of the topic centre are:Assist the European Environment Agency in its task of reporting on Europe's environment by addressing state and trends of biodiversity in EuropeProvide the relevant information to support the implementation of environmental and sustainable development policies in Europe in particular for EU nature and biodiversity policies (DG Environment: Nature and Biodiversity)Build capacity for reporting on biodiversity in Europe, mainly through the European Information and Observation Network (Eionet)

Healthy Seas removes waste, in particular fishing nets from the seas for the purpose of creating healthier seas and recycling marine litter into textile products. The recovered fishing nets will be transformed and regenerated into ECONYL® yarn, a high-quality raw material used to create new products, such as socks, swimwear or carpets. I stood at the cradle of Healthy Seas and was one of the founders. I also was member and rotating chairman of the Healthy Seas Steering Committee.

The goal of the EAF was to fund third parties (semi-state governmental organisations e.g. National Parks, and non-governmental organisations) to buy or lease important natural sites, or purchase concessions, as a means of securing biodiversity and landscape protection and restoration in order to contribute to the Pan European Ecological Network. Between 1996 and 2012, the EECONET Action Fund realised 96 projects with a total budget of ca. 10 million euros. Through these projects, more than 160.000 hectares of land have been protected, in 15 countries. All projects have been completed, with a success rate of 98%. The EECONET ACTION FUND was terminated in 2022.I was co-founder of the Fund, together with Albert Klinkenbergh (M.C.A. Klinkenbergh) and was involved in its development and later on - as Board member - in its operations.

Pan-European Biological and Landscape Diversity was the Pan-European policy-framework for biodiversity and landscape, which included the Pan-European Ecological Network.

This function focussed on issues such as: > EU coordination, cooperation with and support for Central and Eastern Europe, > governmental bilateral cooperation NL - Hungary, NL - Soviet Union/Russia, NL - Poland, NL - Turkey, > tropical rainforest and trade issue, > integrated coastal management and marine areas policies, whales> Integration of biodiversity and nature in the EU Common Agricultural Policy> Marine protected areas - planning as regards Wadden Sea and North Sea > Pan-European Ecological Network including organiser of the EECONET Conference and co-initiator of the EECONET Action Fund> EU nature directives and regulations, in particular the EU Habitat Directive/Natura 2000> Participation in EU Environment Council meetings and prep meetings and participation in Pan-European 'Environment for Europe' Ministerial conferences> The coordination of a support programme for Central and Eastern Europe, including review of project submissions> The development of the International Nature Programme (PIN), and> President of the Council of the Pan-European Biological and Landscape Diversity Strategy.

This function focussed on designations of areas under Nature Conservation Act and international conventions and laws, including Ramsar Convention, World Heritage Convention, and EU Natura 2000 and Council of Europe Awards. Designations included the wetland areas Oosterschelde, the Oostvaardersplassen en de Oude Venen. As part of this job, I coordinated the designation under the Nature Conservation Act of large parts of the Dutch coastal dune areas, based on the national coastal protection action plan.

Development of the National Programme. International. Nature Management. (PIN) 1996-2000. This interministerial programme described the Dutch international nature management policies, including the integration of nature and biodiversity in trade and development cooperation policies, tropical rainforest and EU and bilateral cooperation. I was co-author and team members of PIN.

The Dutch Nature Policy Plan was a strategic governmental policy document, which, inter alia, introduced the National Ecological Network and the integration of nature and biodiversity into economic sectors. I was member of the Nature Policy Plan team, and co-author of the Plan. In that position, I contributed to subjects such as geosites, nature in cities, ecological corridors and nature development, and the international dimension of nature conservation.

Researcher at the University of Groningen, focussing on spatial functioning and restoration of excavation areas, including the Kraaijenbergse Plassen, Cuijk, The Netherlands. Working with excavation companies. Published in the Netherlands' Geographic Studies a book on external management of nature reserves, linked to water management, reallotments and atmospheric depositions, in particular nitrogen.
