Profile bio

About Rob Best

At the age when many of my peers were enjoying their last summer before college, I was poring over the IPCC findings, preparing for the Envirothon national environmental science competition. My love for the outdoors which first led me to Envirothon had extended to a fascination with the impact of humanity on the globe, and particularly on our climate. Wielding my newfound facts in the arena of the competition--a proposal for a hypothetical new development at the intersection of pristine forest and an existing city--enthralled and powered me through sleepless nights of preparation before and during the competition. As I flew home from the event, watching the starbursts of cities pass below, I felt I had found my path--understanding and reducing the human impact on earth, particularly in our largest habitat, cities. As an engineering student at Harvey Mudd, I blended a general engineering background with studies in environmental policy and history, culminating in a Fellowship at CTG Energetics learning the basics of green building design. After graduating, I embarked on a year-long Watson Fellowship, circumnavigating the globe studying the intersection of vernacular architecture and historic urban centers with modern approaches to sustainable city planning. The naturally emergent nexus of livability, ecological design, and prosperity in the historic cities led me to a Ph.D. at Stanford University in Sustainable Design and Construction, where I researched how computational optimization can improve planning and energy efficiency of modern urban centers.Today, I aim in my career to do all I can to curb climate change through rapid decarbonization of the built environment. My background reflects this through research and practice in optimization of district thermal systems and renewables, portfolio building decarbonization, life cycle cost assessment, and policy support and analysis. In my role at Arup, I lead multiple projects from individual buildings seeking net-zero aims, to campuses striving for zero carbon design and operation, to policy support for city and state decarbonization efforts. I find that leveraging detailed design to achieve impactful policy is an extension of the excitement I felt years ago in the Envirothon competition, though with more satisfaction that the impact is real.
