Youth Worker

Violence Reduction Unit Youth Worker

Wakefield, England, United Kingdom

During a secondment I worked as a VRU Youth Worker based in the community and the A+E department at Pinderfields Hospital, Wakefield. I worked with young people aged 10-25 who accessed the hospital as a result of involvement in a violent incident. My job was to build a relationship with the young person(s) at the ‘teachable moment’ in order to provide intervention, support, and try help them turn away from their involvement or association with crime. In order to help the person(s) change I used one of my strongest skills; communication. I am a very open, honest and genuine person which shows when I speak and listen to other people. I demonstrate a therapeutic approach by being warm and honest; showing a continued interest in what people have to say. I feel it is necessary to have a relaxing and welcoming stance in order let people open up in their own time. I also like to use empathy when speaking to people that are facing difficult situations as this shows that I am trying to understand their point of view and what they are going through. I also use simple reflection during conversations to check the information that I have heard. This gives the person I am speaking to time to hear what I have said and also gives me time to think about which direction I would like the discussion to go. I feel this encourages the other person to engage as they are aware I am actively listening to them.

Resettlement Caseworker

Wakefield, England, United Kingdom

As a Caseworker at HMP New Hall I supported female prisoners through their sentence in order to try and break the cycle of re-offending; with the focus on empowering change. I tried to implement change by providing information and assistance based on an individuals identified needs. Such needs were identified through face to face assessments and collated information on prison systems such as C-nomis and OASys. After I had completed the assessment the information was inputted on to a contact log, resettlement review (OASys), C-Nomis and Excel spreadsheet. Based on what the prisoner had disclosed, I would then make referrals to accommodation providers, substance misuse, mental health (both custody and community). I always tried to help motivate offenders to look towards the future instead of dwelling on the past. However, that is not to say the past is unimportant as these experiences can be developed upon and new skills can be learned. I have worked with a lot of people that show resilience and a lack of desire to change due to their sentence length or mental health. I tried my very best every day to be responsive to this in order to motivate them to what they want to achieve; whether that be gaining confidence to speak in a group room or work on problematic areas in their life that led to an offence taking place. At the end of the day only they can make that change. However, I have always been a person that shows willingness to help people make that change happen.

Intervention Facilitator

Wakefield, England, United Kingdom

I deliver a range of group based interventions which include assessment, group and individual treatment and provide support in the psychology department/interventions function in the delivery of services. I also interview and assess prisoners on a one on one basis. These interviews require me to ask open questions about a prisoner’s offence(s) and motivations for attending programmes. I am required to give my opinion on the prisoners suitability based on such interviews. Additionally, I deliver interventions to offenders with Low to Very High risk scores. The role also involves a great deal of admin work which includes: report/log writing, programme suitability, RM 2000 (risk assessments), prisoner call ups, and inputting data on IT software such as Microsoft Word and Excel. As an additional part of the role, I am included in the support and development of the Wayfinder initiative. The Wayfinder initiative is eligible for prisoners that have completed programmes. They then progress to help rehabilitate other prisoners through peer support. My role includes, the scheduling and chairing of meetings, support training, and the recruitment of potential Wayfinders. On the whole, the job is very challenging but very rewarding and continues to be different every day.

Sep 2017 - Oct 2018

Operations Support

Wakefield, England, United Kingdom

As an OSG my duties change from day to day. As a team, we check in staff members, visitors (social and legal) and contractors safely and securely by ensuring their possessions are x-ray scanned and persons rubbed down. I also assist prison officers with prisoner escorts on foot and by car to other prisons, hospitals and different sections of Wakefield Prison. We ensure prisoners are booked in and out correctly when leaving and entering the establishment. The role also involves a lot of admin work involving booking visitor (legal and social) appointments with prisoners. Myself and colleagues also try and contribute to achieving a rehabilitative culture at HMP Wakefield by talking to the prisoners when possible. Personally, I try and encourage good behaviour through personal example, with the ultimate goal of trying to change prisoner’s attitudes, thinking patterns and reduce re-offending. Every duty is strictly followed by procedures and guidelines.

As an Events Steward my main responsibilities included, providing general guidance to the public, keeping the public safe and observing large crowds for any signs of irrational behaviour.
