NAPA is a collective of retailers, food service companies, supply-chain businesses and salmon farmers with a commitment to sourcing sustainable seafood and achieving long-term sustainability through robustly managed pelagic fisheries. In the Project Lead role I'm working with Seafish and NAPA Members across Europe and globally to push for improved, shared management of the hugely important North East Atlantic mackerel, Atlanto-Scandian herring and North East Atlantic blue whiting stocks. The key aims are threefold: 1) agreement on a multilateral arrangement to share access to the fisheries between the Coastal States with interests in the stocks, 2) that total catches from each stock are taken in line with scientific advice, and 3) agreement on a formal disputes resolution process to ensure unilateral actions don't threaten sustainability going forward. All three stocks are data rich and we know overfishing is occurring (F > Fmsy), but the solution is political - now is the time for action!

Ichthys Marine was established in 2009, with the aim of providing a high quality, innovative marine environmental and fisheries consultancy service. It draws on more than thirty years of marine science, management and policy experience shared between the two principals. At Ichthys Marine, we believe that the marine environment has key economic, social and cultural importance, and that healthy human communities depend upon healthy environments. We intend that our expertise and advice is used to ensure that the marine environment is well managed, sustainably exploited and appropriately protected.

I've spent years working with commercial fishermen and talking about commercial fishing, and have long hankered to be a commercial fisherman - at the start of 2021 I saw my opportunity! So, now, weather, season and other commitments permitting I'll be out catching bass on my commercial rod and line boat 'Imiloa', PE5. I'm doing everything I can to maximise quality (I catch the fish one at a time, I employ the ikejime technique for dispatch, and then each fish is bled and placed into slush ice for the duration). My fish is sold mainly through the Brixham market, but I also sell to local customers (individuals and restaurants) and can send fresh, chilled fish around the country by 24hr courier.

• Led and developed Natural England’s marine fisheries program, including advising UK Government on marine commercial and sport fisheries research, policy and management.• Provided thought leadership on major national work programs, including the UK Scalloping Strategy, the MPA Campaign and the North Sea MPA project. • Acted as organizational lead on marine fisheries at Governmental and stakeholder meetings.• Led on the development of sustainable solutions to national level marine fisheries and conservation casework, in accordance with relevant European and national legislation.• Acted as National Account Manager for the Sea Fish Industry Authority, the Association of Sea Fisheries Committees and the Shellfish Association of Great Britain.• Drafted Natural England’s marine fisheries and aquaculture policy statement.

• Line-managed the senior research, environment and fisheries patrol vessel staff, and co-managed the activities of sixteen Fishery Officers and three patrol boats.• Provided the Committee with briefing and expert input at quarterly Statutory Meetings.• Acted as Senior Prosecuting Officer for the preparation of legal cases. • Established links for commercial fishers to funding opportunities that eventually led to ≈£5M of fisheries infrastructure development in the Eastern Committee’s District.

• Developed and conducted a public consultation on the future of commercial and sport fishing in the Stour and Orwell Estuaries, the first UK development proposal of its kind.• Developed evidence and solely represented the Committee at the Bathside Bay Public Inquiry. • Drafted Committee responses to relevant consultations, including aggregate dredging, wind turbine and beach recharge proposals.

• Designing high-precision, temperature-controlled experimental systems to support and refine annual egg production stock assessment methods for commercial fish species. This work supported the research efforts of four laboratories.• Captaining the fast inshore research vessel for fisheries sampling (beam trawling, seine netting and gill netting) and dive sampling activities.• Advising higher degree and post-doctoral researchers on experimental design and set-up.• Developing commercial hatchery techniques for marine fish species new to aquaculture, including Atlantic cod, haddock and Dover sole.

Selonda Aquaculture is one of the leading seabass and sea bream farming companies in Europe. My roles included:• Ensured broodstock, egg and larval husbandry by all staff was of the highest standard.• Provided a lead management role as one of the team of 5 lead hatchery staff members.

Mannin Seafarms were one of the pioneering marine aquaculture hatcheries in Europe, producing Atlantic halibut and European turbot fingerlings. My roles included:• Worked within a small team on all areas of hatchery operation, including night call-out.• Managed the live feed production and broodstock husbandry operations.
