I retired from CSIRO in July 2024 after over 34 years of service. I am now available on a limited consultancy basis for projects of interest relating to Precision/Digital Agriculture/Viticulture and wine terroir.During my research career, I was principally focussed on the management of variability in agricultural systems. Since 1998, I took a leading role in understanding vineyard variability and the development of Precision Viticulture, working closely with industry to derive benefits from the collection and use of spatial data in grape and wine production systems. This also led to a substantial portfolio of research in wine terroir at both vineyard and regional scale. I was also active in Precision Agriculture research and application of digital technologies in the grains and sugar sectors. The use of on-farm experimentation using spatially-distributed designs as a farm business improvement tool has been a key interest. I am a Soil Scientist by training with BSc (Hons) and PhD degrees in Soil Science from the University of Newcastle Upon Tyne (UK) and Massey University (NZ). I am also a graduate of the Australian Institute of Company Directors and have completed several other business/leadership courses.Specialties: Precision Agriculture / Viticulture, Terroir, Farming systems.Note: Periodically, I 'clean up' my LinkedIn connections list - it can get full of people I don't know or even have any knowledge of – and I generally don’t accept connection requests that appear purely speculative.
