About Robby May

Dr. Robby May is the Paramedic Education Specialist with the Howard County Department of Fire and Rescue Services in the Baltimore-Washington Metro area. Additionally, he serves as a paramedic with Garrett County Emergency Services in rural Appalachia and is an instructor trainer for the University of Maryland Fire and Rescue Institute. He has been volunteering and working in EMS since 2003.Dr. May is passionate about EMS education, holding Maryland Instructor Certification Review Board teaching credentials and National EMS Educator Certification from the National Association of EMS Educators. As Lead Instructor of the Paramedic Program at Howard, every class he has taught has had a 100% first-attempt success rate for the first time in department history on both their NREMT exam. He also serves as an ALS Instructor and Instructor Trainer for the University of Maryland Fire and Rescue Institute. He has served as the lead curriculum developer on a variety of projects for MFRI, Garrett, and Howard counties, including Howard County’s Whole Blood Field Administration Education, helping Howard become the first ground-based EMS system in Maryland to have whole blood available for patients in the field, and MFRI’s NCCR ALS Refresher. He is most proud of designing and delivering the first LGBTQ+ Cultural Awareness and Medical Equity Course, which is now included in the mandatory BLS and ALS refresher for all clinicians in Maryland.Dr. May sits on various EMS committees, including the MIEMSS State ALS Committee, the National Association of EMS Educators Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, the Prehospital Blood Transfusion Initiative, and Belonging Committee, and the NREMT Taskforce on Inclusion, Diveristy, Equity, and Access.Dr. May also has an extensive background in K-12 education, serving for 13 years teaching middle and high school as a Nationally Board Certified social studies facilitator of learning experiences. His teaching experiences include public, private, and public charter schools in both rural and urban schools. While teaching, his students consistently had some of the highest AP test scores in Maryland. The continuity between all of these positions is his passion for facilitating learning, no matter the age of the student. As a facilitator of learning experiences, he is fervently dedicated to fighting for social justice and being a co-learner with his students in order to help them become change agents in the world.

Third author on a paper explaining our process in the Journal of the American College of Emergency Physicians.Served as the lead instructional designer on a variety of EMS courses for the department. Negotiated and crafted an articulation agreement with Hagerstown Community College so that paramedic students can earn their A.A.S. degree at the completion of our Paramedic Program and are given 41 credits free of charge by the college. Currently working with physicians from Johns Hopkins University on a research project about paramedic students and their interactions with geriatric patients as they do house calls with physicians.
