About Robby Macdonell

I’ve been working for startups for a while. Sometimes I love it. Sometimes it’s a huge bummer. I’ve learned to laugh my way through crazy, hilarious train wrecks and held on tight riding hockey stick growth curves. It’s bewildering and exhausting, and half the time I feel like I don’t know what the hell I’m doing. But I get to learn so much and work with so many awesome people that I simply can’t imagine doing anything else. Most recently, I was the CEO of RescueTime, a platform that helps individuals and organizations focus on getting more meaningful work done. It's changed my life and given me a perspective on myself that I never imagined. To be able to build something that matters and be able to share it with the world is really special. And doing it alongside the amazing folks that I worked with? Amazing. This startup stuff is actually pretty great, I guess.

RescueTime is a service that helps people understand how they spend their time on the computer. That's really important, because it gives people the proper information to make good choices and helps them ask a really critical question "Am I really spending my days the way I'd like to?" Once people start asking that, a lot of fantastic things follow out of it. People become better at self-managing. They get better at spotting inefficiencies in their day. Ultimately, they learn how to make measurable changes to impact their time in a positive way.I work on connecting people to data about themselves that can improve their lives. It's a pretty awesome job. :)
  • Zulily
    Front-End / User Experience Developer
    Zulily Sep 2010 - Oct 2011
    Greater Seattle Area
At zulily, I worked on the web team, building the front-end interface to zulily's flash sales site. This site received very heavy traffic, so performance was very important. It was also a fantastic opportunity for rapid iteration and testing. The operative word here is rapid. zulily is known for their breakneck speed of development. Things moved fast, and to keep up we had to get really creative about how to accomplish so much in so little time. In addition to building out a performant website, I set up their initial conversion testing frameworks and made sure every aspect of the site was properly instrumented. I worked closely with the analytics team to figure out what features were working and continuously improve the site. I also worked with the marketing team to conduct user studies to fully understand the needs of zulily's passionate userbase.
  • Recruiting.Com
    Senior User Interface Designer
    Recruiting.Com Dec 2006 - Sep 2010
    Greater Seattle Area
Recruiting.com’s web-based recruiting CRM software is designed to remove the complexity of finding and managing candidates from multiple sources, allowing the user to easily search for, collect, organize and communicate with prospective candidates from a single application.I worked with a small team to build this product from the ground up. We conducted extensive early-stage user studies to refine and validate the core goals of the product. I then worked closely with our VP of product development to craft an application that was tightly-focused on the primary use cases. I led the user experience effort of the application, starting from creating a solid information architecture, on to the final visual and interaction polish. We took a highly iterative, minimum-viable-product approach to building recruiting.com, which gave us the agility to course-correct when we realized a feature wasn't quite solving users' problems like we'd hoped. I was really pleased with the way that approach worked out.On the technical side of things. I implemented the majority of the front-end code as well. This involved a lot of Javascript, CSS, and front-end Ruby on Rails.

  • 1066Propaganda
    Owner
    1066Propaganda Nov 2003 - Jul 2007
    Greater Boston Area
1066 Propaganda was the professional name I attached to my design and development work when I was self-employed. It was a fun time where I got to wear a lot of different hats, collaborate with some amazing people, and work on all kinds of projects. Ultimately, I found the "get in / get out" aspect of consulting work to be fairly unfulfilling, and wound things down so I could focus on more long-term projects.
