Farm Jenny was founded in 2017 to provide peace of mind to horse and livestock owners with real-time smartphone alerts from wearable sensors using an on-farm mesh network. Farm Jenny shipped first products to customers as part of AlphaLab Gear cohort #5 and secured nearly $1M in follow-on investment. Our team delivered a complete solution to the market in 2019, including a wearable sensor with soft-good attachment, solar-powered farm-grade mesh network, a cloud backend, and smartphone apps on iOS and Android.I handled all aspects of the product's design: electronics, embedded firmware, mechanical, soft-goods; and worked closely with contract and in-house software developers on the Linux gateway, cloud backend, and smartphone apps. As COO, I also did procurement, manufacturing, accounting, fundraising, IP, sales, field service, office space, and countless other functions in running a growing technology manufacturer.Farm Jenny, after barely weathering the pandemic, failed to achieve sufficient market traction needed to secure further investment and ceased operations in 2023.

ActiveBlu was founded in 2015 to accelerate the application of wearable electronics and connectivity to the safety, productivity and well-being of the industrial worker. Its technology solutions included wearable devices, embedded firmware, smartphone apps, and cloud computing employed in private-label worker safety solutions. Additional products included the AB1000ex Bluetooth Beacon, the first of its kind, suitable for use in explosive and other industrial atmospheres. Other core technologies include novel application of Bluetooth and cellular communications, rugged low-power wearables and design for explosive atmospheres.As part of the founding team at ActiveBlu, my role was broad and included electronic and mechanical design, embedded firmware development, Hazardous Location certification (UL/CSA), product literature and packaging, supply chain, manufacturing engineering, documentation control, operations management, and countless other disciplines involved in starting and running a lean organization serving a highly-regulated industry.ActiveBlu products are used in the location awareness (iAssign Beacon) and lone worker communications (iNet Now) offerings by Industrial Scientific. In 2017, ActiveBlu was acquired by Industrial Scientific.

Industrial Scientific is a leading manufacturer of high-quality portable gas detection instruments. During this period of significant business growth, I helped build an outstanding engineering organization and led the development and commercial release of two portable instrument platforms (Tango and VentisPro). I also conceived and implemented an industrial-grade, ad-hoc wireless mesh network (LENS Wireless). My team embraced multiple collaborative concepts and tools enabling a 25% reduction in large-project cycle time. My proudest accomplishment was as Chief Engineer for the Ventis Pro Platform, where my team delivered the most connected portable instrument ever -- in just 18 months, under budget, and exceeding the product margin target.

As Chief Engineer, CT Injection Systems, I was entrusted with technical responsibility for the company’s largest and most profitable product line. My team and I updated the wildly popular flagship Stellant product -- simultaneously modernizing the user interface, improving manufacturability and dramatically improving fluid delivery performance (DSP servo control of high performance motors). This period also saw enhanced networking for informatics capability, remote service, and interface to hospital records systems.

In 2003, I joined a small team with the challenge of building a new MR-compatible Vital Signs Monitor. We developed an MR-compatible ECG, imaging system interface, fiber-optic pulse oximeter and fiber optic temperature probe. Development included an ECG clinical trial. The product received a 2005 Frost and Sullivan Award in its first year and took MEDRAD from a 5% to 33% market share in just 3 years! In 2006, I was promoted to the role of Chief Engineer with overall responsibility for product enhancements and eventually the architecture for a successor product.

MEDRAD (now a brand of Bayer Healthcare) was a $125M, 600-person company when I joined in 2000. My first assignment was to design electronics for Solaris, a second-generation MR-compatible contrast media injector. My responsibilities quickly grew and I was soon asked to lead the electrical team for Stellant, a revolutionary CT contrast media injector. This was a sophisticated, must-launch project due to expiring IP. My team of 7 completed 17 PCB designs including 5 embedded processors. What resulted is still the most successful product in MEDRAD history.

I was assigned to the joint Air Force and Navy program office responsible developing and deploying the T-6A Texan II Aircraft. I developed specifications and provided technical oversight for development of ground-based assets, including $370M in flight simulators and a $90M computer network. I developed and applied formal systems engineering skills including requirement traceability and allocation. My role included work inside major defense contractors throughout the US, providing valuable insights into the coordination and management of large-scale product development. I left active duty in January 2000 and served my remaining term in the Individual Ready Reserves.
