Camp And Research ManagerSumatran Orangutan Conservation Programme Jan 2014 - Jul 2014Batang Toru, Pandan, Central Tapanuli, North Sumatra, IndonesiaSix months in 2014 were spent working as the senior and only western member of staff in the mountainous rainforests of Batang Toru, Sumatra, as a Camp and Research Manager. This remote field station works in association with SOCP, PanEco and Yayasan Ekosistem Lestari (YEL) with the aim of collecting valuable floral and faunal data in the forest in order to protect it, whilst also educating and involving neighbouring locals in grassroots conservation projects. Some of the tasks consisted of:- Managing the daily work schedules and timetable for a group of local non-English speaking staff members.- Organising all of the research conducted at camp and deciding the facility’s day-to-day agendas, as well as aiding in the collection of data; often working in a team but also frequently unaccompanied.- Working closely with the off-site finance team to ensure general camp logistics including food, fuel and research equipment were always stocked and in-budget.- Guiding and supporting guests when visiting the forest. This included research students, volunteers from local schools, as well as photographers and writers from National Geographic.- Assisting the educational team outside of the forest by joining teaching trips to local primary and secondary schools, while also supporting their junior tree planting programs. -
