About Steve Roberds

I seek success by working collaboratively with others using a win-win mind-set. During my 16 years as a scientist and project team leader in the pharmaceutical industry, I was challenged with generating ideas and critically evaluating scientific rationale in diverse disease areas including neurology and psychiatry, cardiovascular and kidney disease, pain, and asthma. My leadership of global, multi-disciplinary research teams contributed to advancing drug discovery and development projects along the continuum from the idea stage to design of Phase 2 proof-of-concept studies in humans. In my current role, I utilize my drug discovery experience to catalyze research to find a cure and improve the lives of those affected by tuberous sclerosis complex (TSC).TSC is a rare genetic disorder that causes non-malignant tumors to form in many different organs, primarily in the brain, eyes, heart, kidney, skin and lungs. The aspects of TSC that most strongly impact quality of life are generally associated with the brain: seizures, developmental delay, intellectual disability and autism. However, the incidence and severity of the various aspects of TSC can vary widely between individuals—even between identical twins. The TSC Alliance is dedicated to finding a cure for TSC while improving the lives of those affected, and I am committed to helping achieve that goal.In addition to science, I enjoy time with my wife and best friend of 35+ years, whether traveling, taking in a baseball game, or enjoying a glass of wine or a local craft brew. And I swell with pride watching our three grown children developing into giving and caring adults.

  • Tsc Alliance
    Chief Scientific Officer
Tsc Alliance Jun 2011 - Present
    Washington D.C. Metro Area
The TSC Alliance is dedicated to finding a cure for tuberous sclerosis complex (TSC) while improving the lives of those affected. As Chief Scientific Officer, I lead the scientific strategy of the TSC Alliance. To succeed in this role, I partner with scientists and clinicians in basic, translational and clinical research to advance new treatments--and ultimately a cure--for TSC. Since I joined the organization in 2011, the TSC Alliance has added a Preclinical Consortium, a Biosample Repository to collect and share biosamples from individuals enrolled in the TSC Natural History Database, and a Clinical Research Consortium. I engage members of the TSC community and leaders from industry, academic institutions, public health agencies, and key research donors to further the mission of the organization.
  • Pfizer
    Associate Research Fellow
    Pfizer Aug 2003 - Jun 2011
    Greater St. Louis Area
As a Research Project Leader in the Indications Discovery Unit from 2007-2011, I drove global cross-functional project teams to deliver new human proof-of-concept studies for novel uses of Pfizer compounds that were originally designed with a different indication in mind. Most recently, I led a project in Phase 1 with a novel compound for the treatment of diabetic nephropathy. Additionally, building on my experience with neurologic and psychiatric disease research, I was the primary interface between the Indications Discovery and the Neuroscience Research Units. I also collaborated with Pfizer Specialty Care Business Unit colleagues and academic key opinion leaders to develop and execute a strategy to identify compounds to treat neurodegenerative eye diseases. Prior to joining the Indications Discovery Unit, I was leader of a rapidly advancing cardovascular discovery project for 3 years.
  • Pharmacia (Acquired By Pfizer In 2003)

    Pharmacia (Acquired By Pfizer In 2003) 1995 - 2003
    Kalamazoo, Michigan Area
My laboratory's research focused on new target identification and validation in asthma, CNS, and pain. Research tools applied in my laboratory involved microarrays, knockout mice, leveraging genomic databases, and ion channel cloning and expression. During this time, I gained leadership experience with increasing levels of responsibility for projects and strategy at the project team and departmental level.
  • University Of Iowa, Hhmi
