I lead Fairwinds' software initiatives. My team consists of 11 Developers, Designers, SREs, and QA engineers (as well as two engineering managers), all working on Fairwinds Insights, a platform for Kubernetes Security, Policy, and Cost Management. Under my tenure, we've grown Insights from $0 to over $1M ARR, and were named a "Cool Vendor" by Garnter: https://www.fairwinds.com/gartner-cool-vendorI wrote the first lines of code for Insights, and organically grew this team over four years. Now my core responsibilities include hiring, mentorship, roadmapping, scoping features, and designing application architecture. I work directly with the VP of Engineering to define and maintain a healthy, supportive, and inclusive engineering culture at Fairwinds; partner closely the VP of Product to plan out the roadmap; and collaborate with our CTO to brainstorm new ideas and improve our infrastructure. Weekly calls with both customers and prospects help me better understand what our users need and where the application should go next.

As Director of Open Source and as the first Software Engineer at Fairwinds, I was responsible for helping to build a software development program from scratch. This involved hiring a small team of engineers, maturing our existing portfolio of open source projects, and beginning to develop a commercial software application.While in this position, I worked closely with the CTO and VP of Product to build and execute on a software roadmap, and regularly met with the executive team to communicate progress. I regularly attended calls with customers and prospects, and worked cross-functionally to ensure we were focused on building the right things.

I worked on a variety of machine learning projects with the Rho team as a subcontractor. Projects included:- image and video processing- business analytics- financial modeling- time series data- data visualization

At LucyBot, I was part of a two-person team (plus a handful of contractors), working on commercial software, open source, and contract work. I did a combination of software development, management, sales, marketing, and finance.Major projects:* DocGen: this was a revenue-generating, open-core platform for writing and maintaining documentation for REST APIs. The software was used by companies like Kaltura and the New York Times, and is still in use today.* AnyAPI: AnyAPI aggregated publicly available API specifications, and used DocGen to create a portal of API documentation. Traffic reached as high as 40k unique monthly visitors. AnyAPI was sold to apilayer in Q1 2019.* DataFire: DataFire was a developer-first, Zapier-like platform for building API integrations. The core engine was open source, while the user interface was commercial-only. DataFire ran as a revenue-generating SaaS for over 4 years before being retired.

At Google I worked on Search Quality.For my first year or so I worked on an NLP algorithm which generates a title for any given document on the web, which is then used as that document's link in search results. One project increased our team's impact by 33%; another generated a vast improvement in the formatting and capitalization of titles for low-quality documents.In 2013, I built a prototype for a Question Answering algorithm in my spare time - a system that could respond to queries like "Why is the sky blue?". Based on the initial results, I was encouraged to work on Question Answering full time, and launched a more mature version of my algorithm in August 2013, which showed answers for about 30M queries per month:http://www.google.com/search?q=why+is+the+sky+blueI later transferred ownership of this algorithm to a team in Mountain View, and our combined efforts resulted in Patent US9940367B1, as well as much larger impact (over 300M queries per month).In May 2013 I moved to Cambridge to work on Google's Smartwatch platform, Android Wear. There I worked on data-driven approaches to notification ranking, implementing voice search, and the low-power ambient state.

Worked in Search Quality on the team in charge of search result titles. Webmasters can define their own page titles in HTML, but they often use uninformative words and phrases (e.g. "Home", "Welcome"). I created a method for detecting under-informative titles and marking them for aggressive replacement by our alternative titles.

Worked to build MS Access databases (using VB6) to track bond trades and automate tender notification; built out salesforce.com database to track investors; designed and deployed a database to maintain and track Non-Disclosure Agreements

Helped to maintain all public workstations managed by Columbia Libraries, helped with initial deployment of the new management system (Altiris)

Wrote software to analyze the accuracy of certain predictions regarding the stock market using historical data.

Worked with Quality Assurance to help test software and maintain the machines used for testing.
