Teacher
CurrentI am a teacher at Balarat Outdoor Education which serves every 5th grader in the Denver school district. We provide programming for 5th grade classes that allow students to experience an overnight trip to the mountains near Denver. They have the opportunity to practice science in the field, explore concepts related to Colorado history with hands-on activities and develop relationships with their classmates through a variety of social-emotional learning and adventure activities. We also provide a variety of other programs for different grade levels. We operate 3rd grade day-trips focused on learning about the Montane ecosystem in the foothills of Denver. For some trips we collaborate with the Denver Museum of Nature and Science to provide a full-day experience which allows students to visit the museum collections and interact with staff members and volunteers who teach about Colorado's natural history and share a little about the work that they do as scientists in the museum's collections department.Another big piece of our programming includes facilitating a high school leadership course that allows Denver Public School students to gain experience as leaders for our 5th grade trips. They are trained to lead portions of our trips and teach some of the learning modules that are a part of our different activities. Each high school student joins us for three trips throughout their semester and as they practice their leadership skills during our programming they also work on goal setting and self-reflection for personal growth.
