About Robert Karch
I have over a decade of experience in high-volume, urban EMS systems, as well as experience in suburban agencies. During my time at JCMC, I responded to and worked in the immediate aftermath of Hurricane Sandy. The department demonstrated their faith in my leadership by allowing me to help run our honor guard, which has become a fixture at EMS-related events throughout the northeastern US, as well as in my clinical judgment, by affording me the opportunity to serve as a preceptor for our paramedic program. The knowledge and skills I gained during this time in Jersey City, both clinical and leadership-related, served me well during a deployment to a remote location in Somalia with my National Guard unit, in support of Operation Enduring Freedom - Horn of Africa. My military experience also encompasses the instruction of hundreds of soldiers, American and foreign, in tactical medicine due to my training as an Army Instructor.My studies in Public Health will allow me to help be a driving force in positive change in EMS, at least in my department, hopefully in my state, and ideally beyond. Emergency medical services have evolved past picking people up and driving as fast as possible to the emergency department; the arena of pre-hospital medicine will require knowledge of health education, population health, and epidemiology, and it is my goal to be a source of that knowledge.
