This EWS won recognition by the UN Mission in South Sudan and was accepted as a local partner in the early warning systems of the African Union (CEWS) and the East African Intergovernmental Authority on Development (CEWARN). •Managed and trained partner CEPO staff. •Outreach to potential civilian participants, including marginalized groups like women, minorities and the displaced, developing targeted approaches for maintaining engagement. •Managed the project budget, monitored expenditure, and completed narrative and financial reports for DFID. •Conducted civilian-focused advocacy and media work on human rights, International Humanitarian Law, and civilian protection and empowerment based on the outputs of the EWS in coordination with CEPO. I worked to increase the relevance of CEPO’s messaging and thereby its salience to key international decision makers, and used this impact with international decision makers to influence national decision makers. I researched and drafted advocacy outputs including submissions to the UN Commission on Human Rights in South Sudan, the AU, IGAD, a plan for a national civil society-led conflict resolution mechanism requested by the government of South Sudan (which won support from the UN and key international actors) and a presentation to the UN Security Council on the peace process, delivered by the head of our civilian partner CEPO in June 2020. •Employed responsive measuring, evaluation and learning procedures throughout the project based on a comprehensive situational analysis and wrote a lessons learned report (available upon request) assessing the potential for civilian-led monitoring in conflict zones, considering advantages, the mitigation of potential risks, and key considerations for development and operation.
