About Robert Ballard
I could describe myself as “Being In The Know”, and that is my drive. I am a seasoned Research and Development Engineer with a passion to learn what I don’t know, and seizing the opportunity to do so. I have spent my professional career learning about water and its applications, mostly in the field of fire protection. I have also dabbled in the realms of reverse osmosis. My career has provided me with opportunities to hold positions such as Technical Leader and Research and Development Manager allowing me to hire and build teams and manage engineers as well as technical staff. Having risen through the ranks from draftsman, project engineer, to R&D manager as well as working with the multiple facets of manufacturing, I have become well versed in new product development and the requirements of bringing new products to market.“Putting Out Fires” on a daily basis! This has become my field of expertise. I have developed products used on fire apparatus, building connections, fire protection valves and appliances, as well as fire sprinklers and special hazard systems. The “drive” is not only learning new information but also researching better ways to protect lives and property.Highlights of my career include the construction and staffing of a new Research and Development laboratory. Developing storage sprinklers and co-developing the solder links used to operate the sprinklers. Perhaps the greatest achievement, which has led to several patents, is developing emitter nozzles and a fire suppression system.Specialties: Water mist, , Fire Sprinklers, Fire Protection, FEA, FDS, Special Hazards, Data Center and Turbine Fire ProtectionAgency Testing, UL, FM, LPCB, VDS, TUV, CSATrained Fire Fighter I, II, EVOC, Hazmat.
Listed skills include Fire Protection, Engineering, Fire Suppression Systems, Product Development, and 45 others.

Fire Suppression Technology Manager
At Victaulic, my experience began with the development of the K14 and K17 ESFR and K25 CMSA Pendent Sprinklers. I co developed the fast response and standard response solder links and created a machine to solder the links for prototypes. The design was later carried over into production. In 2003 I began developing the Vortex Hybrid Fire Suppression System. I began with the notion that I would use nitrogen gas and it's energy to atomize the water into small droplets. Through Research and Development testing, I determined the best characteristics and parameters to develop fine water mist at very low pressures. The result is a device which can produce water-mist with gas flows ranging from 13-250 SCFM and gas pressures ranging from 40-10 psi. The most unique feature of the emitter is its use of nitrogen. I began the project in search of a better method to develop water mist, the result is a new approach to fire suppression utilizing the key benefits from both water mist and clean agents. I began testing in 2004 at Underwriters Laboratories using standards such as 1626 and 2127. In 2005 I began testing the system at Factory Mutual using the 5560 water mist standard. During the time period of 2005 - 2007 the Vortex system underwent testing in machinery space enclosures such as, 130, 260, 550, 880, 3600 cubic meters. During this time, FM recognized the system as being a Hybrid technology and granted approval to a new FM standard, 5580. Development and testing continues today as we continue to meet the customers new applications and requirements. Full size mock up testing as well as materials and flammable liquids undergo testing at the Victaulic R&D lab.Although most of my time at Victaulic is spent on Vortex, I am currently studying applications and developing large valves for the Reverse Osmosis market.
