Responsible for the design, graphics and photography of the magazine. Supervised a staff of eight, as well as freelancers and photographers. Worked closely with the editorial department to create the look and feel of stories, coordinated the layout and production with them, and maintained a monthly deadline and production schedule and budgets. Worked with advertising and promotion to create in-house ads and promotions, as well as ideas and concepts for the web site.
Founded in 1985 with my late wife, the artist Susan Davis, to provide creative services to a wide variety of clients including Fortune 500 companies, publishing companies, public relations firms, law firms, developers; public institutions such as the Smithsonian Air & Space Museum and National Museum of the American Indian and Marine Corps Museum; colleges and private clients. Received numerous awards and recognition from Art Directors' Clubs: Washington, gold medal and awards of excellence; New York, silver medal and awards of excellence; Society of Publication Design and Society of Newspaper design awards of excellence; Printing Industry of America awards of excellence; Communications Arts and Graphis magazines. Was Art Director on team from New Zealand that won the Venice Biennale Gold Lion Award in 1976.
Became first AME for graphics and art, bringing design and presentation to the paper as a priority. Brought new technology and a professional staff to the paper, and did the first redesign in its history in 1984. Prior to that was Design Director for the original Washington Post Magazine, winning numerous awards for its design and presentation.Returned to the Post in 1999-2001 to work on special projects for the newsroom.
