Having studied at the Mackintosh School of Architecture in Glasgow and University of Sheffield, I qualified as an architect and have lived and worked in London all my career. My experience has been in both private practice as well as in the public sector with the National Portrait Gallery and the NHS. Working on larger scale projects has been a deliberate choice - more design, more time, more budget & definitely more fun - with roles at the NPG and my current role at Guy's & St Thomas' no exception. There can be no greater challenge than designing and delivering a complex project in a large organisation that remains open and operational throughout. If there's one thing to learn and never forget, it's to never lose sight of the visitor, be they coming to a museum or a hospital. The relationship between the visitor and the environment needs to be well planned, complementary, unobtrusive, seamless even. The entire visitor experience matters, from entrance to exit. By always prioritising visitors, they, in turn, develop trust in your brand and become its advocates. I am also passionate about the value of good design and how it can enhance the environment around us and in doing so, improve people's lives.
