Robert Bean Email & Phone Number

Robert Bean is a media artist, writer and teacher living in Halifax, Nova Scotia. He is currently a Professor at NSCAD University. Bean has exhibited his work in solo and group exhibitions in Canada, the United States, Europe, Korea and New Zealand. Utilizing public archives and collections, Bean considers the temporal uncertainty that photographs and digital media evoke in relation to experience, technology and language. Specific to this project is the production of artwork and publications influenced by the culture of networks, machines, mobile computing and obsolescence. Robert Bean was the Artist in Residence at the Canada Science and Technology Museum, Ottawa, Ontario in 2010. In 2011, the CONTACT Photography Festival and the McLuhan Centre for Culture and Technology commissioned Bean to complete a site-specific multimedia installation on the work of Marshall McLuhan titled “Illuminated Manuscripts”. This project was installed at the McLuhan Coach House, University of Toronto and was exhibited in September 2011 at the Centre Culturel Canadien, Paris, France. In November 2011, Bean installed a solo exhibition titled “273 (brushing information against information)” that explored the relationship that John Cage retained with Marshall McLuhan. Organized by Circuit Gallery, Toronto, this exhibition was the opening venue for the McLuhan 100 Conference at the University of Toronto.Bean has published articles on the subject of photography, contemporary art and cultural history. In 2007, Robert Bean received a Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada (SSHRC) Research/Creation grant to pursue a three-year investigation on the subject of “Obsolescence and the Culture of Human Invention”. He is an active researcher in the SSHRC funded Cineflux Research Group at NSCAD University.Bean's work is in public and private collections, including the Canada Council Art Bank, the Art Gallery of Nova Scotia and the National Gallery of Canada.
