Participant on the integration tooling team supporting 777X Wing Skin manufacturing process and proof of concept development. The Team matured a tooling scheme centric about the Boeing Advanced Carbon Fiber Toughened Epoxy Cure systems. Through the development of sub-scale prototype skin sizes, the team has produced a model adopted as “baseline” for 777X production. Personal involvement included multi-faceted project management responsibility of both design and fabrication for skin cauls, structural clamping & controls systems, stringer cauls, numerous ancillary tooling systems, lifting devices, drilling devices, etc, and control code fabrication and tool tryout first use “commissioning” integration activity.

Participated in the D-3 sub-contract with Janicki Industries working on the design & development of the – Vought “One-Piece-Barrel” mandrel tooling project for the 47 & 48 Fuselage Sections on the Boeing 787-8. Duties include project management support, data transfer, detail design and CATIA V surface development for the design and manufacture of two (1/Ea for the 47 & 48 sections respectively) six-segment CFRP lay-up mandrels which will be utilized in the Automated Fiber Placement of Boeing’s One-Piece 787 Composite Fuselage with Integral Stringers.

Participated in program planning and development of design & manufacturing capability for KHI’s 43 Fuselage-Section – Tier-I supplier to Boeing’s 787 program. Specific duties include; The development of 787 components fixturing & shipping scenario for Boeing’s LCF “Large Cargo Freighter”, Tool design for 787 test program including Composite Lay-up Mandrels (BAJ’s) for Cargo Floor Beams, Fuselage Shear Ties, Fuselage Frames, Door Sills, etc., Team Development, planning and design of the 43-Section Fuselage “one piece barrel IML Mandrel tool” for Automated Fiber Placement and co-bonding stringers to skin for Boeing’s One-Piece 787 Composite Fuselage with Integral Stringers.

Mechanical Tool Design engineer supporting vehicle structural design and manufacturing capability for the JSF-35 fighter jet program. Position utilizes CATIA-V5, a Windows based CADD development program allowing design sharing across a Windows based network environment. Position focus includes the development of mechanical tool designs for detail parts through the integrated vehicle assembly. Specific responsibilities include design and drafting of mechanical tooling in support of the manufacture of ferrous, non-ferrous and composite detail parts, through and inclusive of assembly tooling for the production & integration of the vehicle. Extensive use of machine fixtures, composite mold surface design, assembly jigs, and rough and finish machined weldments are included in the effort. Project management tools such as “Earned Value” measured against estimated budget and schedule are deployed across the entire program, and are the responsibility of all designers. Prime focus of design effort was centered on the development of the tooling for manufacturing capability of the FWD and AFT portions of the bi-fricated Inlet-Duct for the JSF.

A typical work package includes project management and negotiation of change order requirements involving budget, schedule, and design liaison issues, as well as 3-D model and drawing creation. Additional responsibilities include the administration and presentation of preliminary, intermediate and critical design/drawing reviews for customer requirements input prior to the release of a design package. Prime M&T focal for Boeing of Portland Tool Engineering offload in support of NC machine fixture operations.
