About Robert Bills
I have joined the Biology Department at Willamette University, Salem, Oregon, as a Visiting Assistant Professor. Formerly a postdoctoral research associate at Binghamton University in the Department of Biological Sciences. I worked in Michelle Withers' lab where our team utilized discipline-based education research (DBER) to transform and reform post-secondary science education within the department, within the institution, and among other SUNY institutions. Our goal was to identify and share pedagogical tools that support instructors in a successful and sustained transition to teach in a more inclusive, academically enriching, and professionally satisfying student-centered classroom. During the Fall 2022 semester, I cotaught a First-Year Student Experience seminar course, "What Is Fun About Fungi," putting into practice many of the pedagogical tools from my research. Before accepting the position at Binghamton, I was an adjunct faculty member at Fairmont State University (FSU) in the Department of Natural Sciences for three semesters. At FSU I taught Human Biology (SCIE 1100, non-majors) lectures and labs, Biological Principles I labs (BIOL 1105; introduction to population biology) and Biological Principles II labs (BIOL 1106; introduction to cellular biology). Prior to my position at FSU, I worked in the lab of Dr. Jonathan Cumming in the Department of Biology at WVU. Our team investigated engineered rhizospheric mutualistic communities (ectomycorrhizal and plant growth promoting bacteria) influence on Populus trichocarpa response to low phosphorus stress. In this position, I mentored undergraduate and graduate students with developing and implementing ectomycorrhizal and arbuscular mycorrhizal fungal inoculation studies on Populus tremuloides. This work has been funded by DOE and includes collaborations with researchers at the Environmental Molecular Sciences Lab. My dissertation research focused on the identification and classification of arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF) using combined morphological and molecular methods. I am also knowledgeable in techniques for collection, culture, and use of infectivity assays. One of my research goals is to study the symbiotic relationships between plants and AMF and identify how to improve plant tolerance to drought, salt and high temperature in order to develop products that address issues associated with soil fertility, land restoration, low input agriculture, food security, and climate change.

Ph.D. Plant And Soil Science
I work with a globally distributed group of mutualistic fungi that colonize the roots of the majority of terrestrial plants. These fungi are known as arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi. These fungi act as an interface between their host plant and the soil by providing scarce nutrients, protection from root pathogens, and tolerance to drought. I am currently working on the systematics and taxonomy of these fungi. This work will help us better understand the diversity and distribution of these environmentally and economically important organisms.
