Profile bio

About Robert Blank

I am an expatriate US physician-scientist now living in Sydney, Australia. I am working part-time as a Senior Research Officer at the Garvan Institute of Medical Research. I am Professor Emeritus of Medicine at the Medical College of Wisconsin, where I also held secondary appointments in Physiology and Cell Biology and a part-time appointment at the Clement J Zablocki VAMC, where I served as Endocrinology Division Chief. I maintained a specialist clinical practice in endocrinology through 2018, focused on complex metabolic bone disease. This included patients with severe comorbidities such as cancer, end stage renal disease, immobilizing conditions, and organ transplantation. It also included patients with rare hereditary diseases with skeletal manifestations, such as osteogenesis imperfecta, hypophosphatasia, Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome, and undiagnosed connective tissue disorders. My practice was heavily skewed toward patients with multiple illnesses and high care needs. I am still a licensed US physician but am not an Australian licensed physician. My research has mostly addressed the genetics of bone biomechanical performance and bone development. My work has featured multiple technical approaches and has included efforts in both common and rare disorders, across the full scale of in vitro, animal model, and human studies. I have long-standing interest in congenital vertebral malformations and rare bone diseases. My current research addresses the interaction of physical performance, comorbidity, and fracture and features data from large epidemiological and administrative datasets.I remain actively engaged with the musculoskeletal health and science community. I hold editorial roles for multiple professional journals and regularly serve on grant review panels for multiple government and private funding agencies. I am committed to advocacy in support of patients with fractures and for scientific research related to musculoskeletal disorders. I am an early-stage investor in several biomedical ventures. These activities allow me to maintain a broad, international professional network spanning multiple medical and scientific specialties. In sum, I have exceptionally broad experience in medicine and biomedical research. I have remained professionally active in US retirement, even though I no longer care for patients. I remain eager to learn and contribute to advances in healthcare.Specialties: genetics, bone biology, endocrinology and metabolism, graduate education

Listed skills include Clinical Research, Molecular Biology, Medicine, Genetics, and 28 others.

Associate Professor Of Medicine

Madison, Wi, Us

I am an old-style medical academic, devoting approximately 3/4 of my time to research related activities, and the remaining 1/4 to a combination of patient care, clinical teaching, and administration. My research focuses on broad issues of the genetic determination of bone properties. Most of that effort is devoted to understanding the basis of strength. As the population ages, low trauma fractures are becoming an ever more important cause of death and disability. We use mice to understand the mechanisms and genetic basis of the inter-individual variability of bone strength. At present, we are most interested in the multiple responses of bone cells to mechanical loading, imposed by weight bearing or muscle contraction. We believe that we have identified a key gene that regulates this response. In the clinic, I see both outpatients and inpatients, with an emphasis on metabolic bone disease and genetic endocrine and bone disorders.I teach in the clinical and research settings, and give occasional lectures in formal classroom settings for various courses. In addition to my primary appointment in the department of medicine, I am affiliated with the graduate programs in cellular and molecular biology, medical genetics, and endocrine and reproductive physiology.I am also an associate director of the University of Wisconsin's Medical Scientist Training (MD-PhD) Program. In this role, I have primary responsibility for our transitional curriculum, as students proceed from medical school to graduate school for their thesis research and also on their return to the clinic at the completion of the PhD.
