Robert Bos completed his 32-year career with WHO on 28 February 2013. Between April 2009 and his retirement, he was the Coordinator of Water, Sanitation, Hygiene and Health at the World Health Organization in Geneva. A public health biologist by training, he has held different positions in the World Health Organization, the first two-and-a-half years at the country office in Costa Rica, and since September 1983 at its headquarters in Geneva. He started his career 1981 as a Costa Rica-based WHO Associate Professional Officer, where he assisted the Government in the establishment of an immunology unit. His positions at WHO headquarters were first in the Division of Vector Biology and Control, later in the Environmental Health Division, which evolved into the current Department of Public Health and Environment.In his position of Coordinator he worked towards the formulation of strategies for the different WSH programme components, with a view towards the development of a comprehensive WHO water, sanitation and health strategy for the period 2012-2020, with an enhanced and diversified resource base. His areas of expertise include environmental management for vector control (in the context of water resources development), health impact assessment, safe use of wastewater in agriculture and the economics of water interventions for improved health.Since his retirement Robert worked as an independent consultant in public health, environment and water & sanitation - he carried out a range of assignments in the field of public health (mainly health impact assessment of development, for the Asian Development Bank, and the governments of the Islamic Republic of Iran and Kenya) and water and sanitation. He is a member of the Supervisory Board of IRC, the International Water and Sanitation Centre since 2013 and since 2017 its Chair. He was a member of the Scientific Programme Committee of the SIWI World Water Week, Stockholm until 2017, and of the Program Committee of the Singapore International Water Week since 2008. He is a senior advisor to the International Water Association, and coordinated for IWA the preparation of a Manual on the Human Rights to Safe Drinkingwater and Sanitation for Practitioners. On 28 August 2022 he received an Honorary Doctorate in Science from the University of West London (UWL).
