My second time around on a workover rig I started off as a derrickhandworking the tubing board and running pump. I soon got promoted to rig operator where I assumed the most critical task on a rig. As rig operator I managed the brake handle and all the controls which would pick up pipe and push them down the hole or pull them out. I alsomanaged the rest of the crew and made sure they efficiently accomplished their tasks.

A drilling rig is much like a workover rig except it is much bigger and hasmuch heavier equipment; and its job is to drill a hole into the earth which will later be fracked and serviced to produce oil. Similar to the workover rig, my critical job was operating the hydraulic tongs, and controlling the winch line to pick up pipe, and operating the pipe wrangler to push pipe to the floor.

As a derrickhand, Iwas also assigned the critical task of operating and maintaining the rig pump.
