I am an aspiring scholar in political science and a PhD student in the Politics department at the University of Virginia. My primary interests are centered on the politics of health in the United States. My research seeks to understand the relationship between political polarization and health, and better understand the political determinants of health in the United States.I am interested in how political elites make sense of health policy, how they communicate that understanding to the public, and how the public interprets that information. I hope to understand the potential for policy feedback, the effect of this phenomenon on political choices like voting, and how institutions of public health can better respond to a polarized political environment. Further, I hope to better understand how growing political polarization (like widening gaps between competing American social identities and an increasingly partisan media ecosystem) affects the complex and consequential relationships that exist in American public opinion, policy, and politics - often through the lens of public health.I am also interested in political extremism. I seek to understand how extremist individuals, political figures, and media outlets communicate their ideas online through social media and other formats, and how these communication strategies make use of health, science, and history to propagate their messages, including through the usage of internet memes.
