I study the interconnections between microbiology, immunology, development, and evolution. As Nasonia wasps are an emerging genetic and symbiosis model system, any study of this animal will require a detailed understanding of the symbionts that affect this host's fitness, ecology, immunity, and development. I use the three species of Nasonia vitripennis, N. giraulti, and N. longicornis to characterize (i) the microbiota of closely related species, (ii) the immune pathways involved in regulating the microbiota, and (iii) how both these entities breakdown during speciation.

My research involved microbial ecology of amphibian skin, especially in the context of bacterial interactions with the lethal skin fungus, Batrachochytrium dendrobatidis, which is causing many amphibian populations to decline or go extinct.
