It was 1986, # 2 person at a bank in the Chicago suburbs. The words of Thoreau buzzed in my head... "most men lead lives of quiet desperation." I decided not to be "that guy" and walked away without a job. A couple of entrepreneurial pursuits later, I joined the growing ranks of startup companies reselling long distance services. 24 years later, I look at how the company survived. A vast majority of the 7 or 8 hundred resellers did not. The answer was twofold: diversify and hire great people who understand the critical importance of customer retention. AMI went after diversification with a capital "D". We can do business in any state. We can provide voice, data, and internet services to businesses from a list of about 70 suppliers. We have our own data center and host various services for clients. We are a Managed Service Provider that becomes the outsourced IT department for businesses and have only lost 2 clients in 9 years. Must be doing something right. We also have a technical sales office in my home state of Wisconsin selling hardware and software often to Fortune 1000 companies, products that manage, optimize and provide security for networks.We are a "Dell House." We sell/configure/install a lot of Dell equipment along with products from about 20 suppliers. And we offer a killer reverse auction product to help a buyer lower its costs to true market levels, through a company called eBridge (www.ebridgeglobal.com) - check them out. Do I still love coming to work each day? Absolutely. I am surrounded by extremely capable, loyal people, and cannot hear enough the affirmation from customers of how much our IT staff is "helpful, patient, and they don't make me feel stupid." Every day they just make AMI look better. This is a good place to be.
