I completed undergraduate biochemistry and medicine at McMaster University. My postgraduate training is that of a generalist resuscitator: a rotating internship was followed by anaesthesia residency at the University of Toronto. I also gained experience as an emergency room physician during that time. I trained as a trauma anaesthesia fellow in 1998-1999 at St. Michael's Hospital in Toronto and the Ryder Trauma Center in Miami. In 2004, I took time away from anaesthesia practice to learn transesophageal echocardiography. As member of the Department of Anaesthesia at St. Michael's Hospital, my practice included trauma team leading, general and cardiovascular anaesthesia, perioperative echocardiography / ultrasound and critical care. My faculty roles were those of a clinician-teacher and clinician-educator. I was the programme director for St. Michael's cardiovascular anaesthesia and perioperative echocardiography fellowship. I was recruited to the University of Ottawa Heart Institute in January 2015 where my practice is divided between cardiac surgery critical care and cardiac anaesthesia. My work efforts as a clinician-teacher and clinician-educator was recognized with a promotion to Associate Professor and recognition by our national society. Professional interests include teaching, curriculum building and developing inter-specialty links for point of care ultrasound (POCUS) and focused cardiac ultrasound (FOCUS).@ottawaheartrob
