I began my work experience at a Kraft Foods dairy in Chambersburg, Pa as an hourly employee. During the 16 years I was there I moved from the BU ranks to Quality Control and then became a Production Supervisor. The plant closed in 1994 and I went to work for James River Corp also in Chambersburg, PA as a Shift Supervisor and then later became the Finishing Dept Superintendant. In 1997 the opportunity came my way to work for Mack Trucks (now Volvo Group Trucks) in Hagerstown MD. There I worked in various roles in the Production of Diesel engines. My last assignment was as Production (line) Manager for the Engine Test areas, Engine Paint Shop and the Product Services Group. Currently I am retired. I am enjoying the freedom that comes with retirement. I do miss the daily interaction with the folks that I worked with for many years. One thing I learned working in different industries is that while processes are different, managing people is very much the same everywhere. My method of managing was one of balance. I always believed that people who are treated with respect and dignity will do more than those who are bullied and coerced. On the rare occasions when discipline was necessary it was done to the full extent of the rules with the objective of correcting behavior without belittling the person. I always felt that discipline was the last resort and that I had failed by not being able to redirect an employee by another means.After 2 1/2 years of retirement I am back at Volvo as a consultant. I am enjoying being back in production.
