Having worked in this field for so long I have seen firsthand what happens when people have the right policies in place and how it makes their lives so much easier. On the other side I know what happens when people do not get the right coverage and suffer a loss. For instance, before Hurricane Sandy struck I made sure some clients had specific protection from fallen overhead power lines. Because they had the proper insurance coverage I was able to make them whole after having lost power for weeks.One client had their car in the shop for repairs. He got into an accident with the rental car, but because his primary car was covered properly he was covered.Another client sued their former employer for wrongful termination. Because they had EPLI coverage (employee practices liability insurance) I was able to save the client thousands of dollars in legal fees and lost work time. They did not have to worry about paying bills while the lawsuit went through the court system which could have lasted a year or more.From the personal side: a client did not want to insure his $10,000 watch, in spite of my warnings. His luggage got stolen while on vacation and he lost the watch. If he had the proper coverage he would have gotten another watch at only the cost of the $500 deductible.My personal approach is to make sure clients get the best coverage for themselves and not what is most profitable for me or my firm.
