After a career in petroleum and environmental geology, I teach Field Camp, Structural Geology, Geology of North America, Natural Disasters, Subsurface Exploration (Geophysics), and Physical Geology. I conduct mentored student research the Sevier orogen in Idaho using geologic mapping, cross-sections, well logs, seismic data, and we put it all together in 3-D geological models. We have used EarthVision 3-D modeling software, Kingdom Suite 2-D and 3-D seismic interpretation software, and Petra for well logs. I'm a strong believer in hands-on field work. I've posted over 100 geological field trips at www.rocdoctravel.com as a resource for my students and the interested community.My students have gone on for graduate school at Stanford, Oklahoma, Baylor, Texas A&M, TCU, Colorado School of Mines, Wyoming, Utah, BYU, Oklahoma State, New Mexico Tech, and several more. For many years, BYU-Idaho was the only undergraduate Geology program allowed to compete in the Imperial Barrel Award competition sponsored annually by the AAPG, and we have done well and gotten good exposure for our program.My primary passion is field geology, in particular our capstone course called Field Camp. When I worked in industry, I discovered that field experience translates directly to exploring and visualizing the subsurface, and so I have been passing on that preparation to 150+ field camp students to date. I also conduct the best field trips I know how in my other courses -- which is easy when you live where we do!
