Profile bio

About Robert Croton

Experienced teacher and researcher in English and History with a PhD in English Literature. I specialise in modern history and literatures but I have a keen interest in early medieval and early modern studies too, particularly in History.Raising awareness of postcolonial (especially South African) theatre and culture is of paramount importance to me, in a time when the Humanities are being questioned and tested by governments.I'm a PhD graduate from Keele University in the UK. My thesis 'Post-Apartheid Theatre: politics, legacies and futures' re-assesses post-apartheid theatre and its role in the present. For my MRes at Keele I researched the work of Athol Fugard. I'm particularly interested in the conflict between liberal humanist and Marxist, antihumanist approaches to literature and culture, which find particular relevance in Fugard. My project has been looking to find a new strategy for reading/spectating/critiquing this most iconic of South African theatre practitioners. This is in line with my general interest in the politics of aesthetics, and historical, materialist approaches to Postcolonial Theory more generally. I'm concerned with the marginalisation of theatre as a form in culture, the academy, but also in Postcolonial theory in general. A burgeoning area of research in theatre and performance studies that I am particularly interested is Scenography and the spatial. I believe that the vexed dialectic between performance and text is directly challenged by South African, and postcolonial, theatre and theory. Rather than take this distinction for granted, I believe all the complexities and contradictions of theatre as a form should be exposed.I am also interested in Animal Studies, theories of democracy and poststructural theory.

Listed skills include Theory, Radio Broadcasting, Postcolonial Theory, Literature, and 12 others.
