About Rob Lindner

Rob has a passion for sustainability that leads to engagement at local and global scale, across a variety of domains and timelines. With an eye ever on impact evaluation, he has been providing sustainability services to communities and organizations through data and analytics, integrating information across environmental, social and financial systems, often into platforms with maps, charts and graphs to support holistic decision making. The past two years, he developed with colleagues a new generation of wellbeing-based planning systems, utilizing multidimensional information systems and ontologically grounded approaches to socioecological applications. Comprehensive assessments provide the basis, they can include stakeholders across ecosystem and society, both market and near-market, their wellbeing, relations and flows between, as well as impacts to them. Most recently, he co-founded Target Impact, which has developed a sustainability framework for converting an organization's environmental and social performance into quantitative measures of financial risk that can be integrated with business financials. He is a requested thinker, leader, speaker and collaborative partner. Relationship building, especially across cultures and perspectives, is at the heart of much of his work. He has traveled to over 30 countries, lived in 6 and often with working alongside indigenous people.

  • Sentinel Outdoor Institute
    Co-Founder/Co-Director
Sentinel Outdoor Institute Jun 2011 - Present
    Missoula, Mt
I co-founded this organization to fill a void I observed guiding internationally - there was a need to build capacity and empower local guides to serve as the leaders, cutting lingering ties of colonialism. Developing sustainable livelihoods, our students not only became leaders in the field, but also in their communities, and some even went on to start their own organizations. Possibly even more rewarding was the success we had growing the offerings to serve game scouts and rangers, NGO teams, and remote communities. Managing highly trained and experienced professionals with a passion to share knowledge of wilderness medicine, outdoor leadership and skills, risk management, and conservation challenges and best practices to better prepare students for the challenges they face. We work around the world, focusing on global destinations rich in natural resources but in need of educational opportunities to harness growing ecotourism, and to care for colleagues, clientele, even family and friends. Students range from climbing, rafting, safari and hunting guides, rangers and anti-poaching units, to researchers, ranchers and remote villages, even professors and school teachers.

Mountain ranches along the Piedra River surrounded by stunning peaks and the San Juan National Forest and Weminuche Wilderness, home to cattle operations since first homesteaded, the Ute before that. This was the first place I was able to apply my study and training as an ecologist, it became my field lab. Renovating historic cabins, restoring streams, meadows and forest for improved habitat and ecosystem services, working with amazing people, I learn from this land and stewardship every day I am fortunate enough to be there. http://pagosaflyfishing.com/

Following passion for the outdoors, endurance events, alpine environments, epic vistas, and teaching and empowering others, I learned more about human behavior, psychology, and leadership in this role than I could have imagined. From corporate powerhouses to youth groups, mountain climbing has a habit of breaking people down and rebuilding them in the most beautiful manner. Mentored by legends of the golden era of American mountaineering, humbled by the trust and responsibility, challenged by the leadership requirements and extreme conditions - this job forged maturity, resilience and a deep understanding of human nature at a surprisingly early stage in life, and lead to global travel to explore some of the world's most spectacular peaks and cultures.
