Gainfully Unemployed (Retired)
CurrentAfter 46 years and one month in the work force since college, I have retired!I’ve had 25 unique job titles/ranks (more if you count variations) in 23 different organizations (27 if you count buy outs and reorganizations) and worked in 36 different offices/cubicles, finishing my Army career as a Command Sergeant Major and my civilian career as a principal engineer.I’ve been laid off three times and called back all three times (though I only accepted two) on contract for a few weeks to train people to do the things I was doing that HR and my own management didn’t know I was doing for the various companies. I was also called back after multiple department changes for similar reasons.In the Army, I worked in the fields of computer maintenance as a repairman and instructor; and been a senior NCO in Data Processing, Hospitals, & Transportation units.In the civilian world I’ve worked in such fields as printing, classroom instruction for technical and HR topics, CNC machine tools, robotics, process control systems, satellite communications, air traffic control, avionics, Ion and Raman spectrometry, finance, On Demand TV, and Computer/Web Based Training.I’ve had to develop skills in graphic design, web design, human interface design, industrial design, software engineering, system architecture, systems engineering, controls engineering, computer maintenance, audio and video editing, and instructional design, as well as the skills required in the Army.I’ve been a paratrooper, been in a war, directed a company orchestra, and made briefing charts in the ages before PowerPoint. I’ve been a substitute teacher for special needs students (they kept bringing me back) and eighth grade remedial English in a school that served sugared beverages and candy at lunch (I was happier in the war zone!). In the Army I had additional tasks as a mail clerk, a tax consultant, and driving safety instructor.This looks more impressive written down than it was while I was living it.
