Interim Head of UKTIN - helping to create a new innovation network for the UK Telecoms industry, bringing together industry, academia, and government to catalyse telecoms R&D investment, cooperation, and commercialisation. Founded in 2022, it is delivered by a consortium of four partners - who draw on their distinct strengths in a collaborative approach: The Digital Catapult (Lead), Cambirdge Wireless, WM5G and the University of Bristol. UKTIN has been initially funded by the UK Department for Science, Innovation and Technology to drive the 5G Supply Chain Diversification Strategy.

Led the UK5G programme on behalf of CW. CW was the lead partner for a consortium chosen by the Department of Digital, Culture Media and Sport, to create and deliver the national 5G Innovation Network. The consortium included CW, the KTN and TM Forum. The 5G Innovation Network brought together and marketed the UK’s 5G eco-system - including the national Testbed & Trials programme along with other business-led 5G initiatives. See www.UK5G.org.

UK Trade & Investment (UKTI, re-named the Department of International Trade in July 2016) was the Government Department that helped UK-based companies succeed in global markets and assisted overseas firms in bringing investment to the UK. Drawing on the expertise of advisers in the UK and the global network of commercial attachés based in British diplomatic offices overseas.Robert led integrated teams supporting UK high growth companies – helping them access overseas venture capital and penetrate technology value chains. He also coordinated the science and innovation agenda within UKTI, and the development of a peer to peer platform for UK exporters and service providers (Open to Export). This included leadership of the HQ Digital Economy Sector Team which coordinates support for digital, software, communications and electronic sectors through the UKTI global network. The team combined Trade and Investment functions.He was also responsible for the delivery of centrally driven UKTI Events and Mission teams, supporting upwards of 40,000 UK companies per annum, covering a wide variety of activities in the UK and overseas, from small missions to large trade fairs.

Robert was UKTI Director for high technology sectors working within Sectors Group, a role he held from 2006. Robert was responsible within UKTI for overall coordination and development of the UK ICT and the UK Life Science marketing strategies. Both strategies aimed to develop overseas trade and inward investment opportunities by enhancing the reputation of UK industry in key markets; thereby helping to generate additional jobs, investment and revenue into the UK. The Sectors Group ICT and Life Science UKTI teams provided support to upwards of 3000 individual UK high technology companies annually.

Robert was the UKTI International Trade Director for the East of England Region, based in Cambridge. He was responsible for the development and delivery of the trade and investment strategy for the region, and the provision of UKTI services to the region. Prior to joining UKTI, Robert worked in the scientific instrumentation sector.
