From 2008 – 2013 Robert Duncan was the Chief Executive Officer for the Hupacasath First Nation and Upnit Power Corporation, a 6.5MW Run-of-River Hydro project located in Port Alberni. From 2004-2008 Robert served as the President of Naut’samawt Resources Group (economic development arm) of the Naut’samawt Tribal Council, based in Tsawwassen B.C. From 1994 – 2003 he lead Campbell River Indian Band in the conceptualizing and building of Discovery Harbor Shopping Centre, a large spacious centre with unique contemporary and traditional indigenous designs, overlooking the spectacular Discovery Passage. Robert initiated the vision and of developing Campbell River as a Port-of-Call for the cruise ship industry, resulting in the arrival of the first cruise ship in June 5, 2007. Robert is also a founding member of Cruise BC which includes Ports of Vancouver/Victoria/Prince Rupert and Nanaimo, industry association for promoting BC to the Cruise Industry.A team player, Robert has fine tuned the art of relationship building, advocacy and win-win negotiations, all necessary components for project development, implementation and completion. He has expertise in complex negotiations with overlapping (on reserve, federal, municipal, provincial) jurisdictions and patiently seeks solutions through the seemingly endless outdated hoops of federal policy, and through layers of intricate corporate lending requirements to develop sustainable First Nations economic development projects and partnerships. As a member of the Da’naxda’xw First Nation, he accepts the privileges and responsibilities of a Bighouse Chief, and actively participates in Kwakiutl culture. He is a father of three and grandfather of Alex, Lola and Owen. Robert was awarded a Queen Elizabeth II Golden Jubilee Medal (2002) for his service to the City of Campbell River and Campbell River Indian Band. Robert enjoys soccer, basketball and traditional activities, and currently lives in Port Alberni BC.
