I mentored students to visualize, analyze, model, and quantify the heat, air, and moisture flows in buildings. I create a non-judgmental environment to promote peer collaboration, and the achievement of a common goal, to become certified energy raters. We train to measure, document, and test the energy related features of residential buildings in accordance with ASHRAE, ANSI, ISO, and IECC Standards, and ENERGY STAR requirements. I create field guides and we learn to conduct pressure tests of buildings and duct systems, and measure and verify components, mechanical systems, and renewable energy.

Leavenworth Ks

KBSI was awarded a contract to perform energy audits and calculations for the historic residential housing on the Fort Leavenworth post. The goal of the project was to calculate “normalization” factors for housing on the post built between 1860 and 1915. I analyzed the energy use of various floor plans with differences in windows, insulation levels, and mechanical equipment. I pressure tested building envelopes, tested the air leakage of duct systems, evaluated mechanical system efficiencies, and analyzed these data using EnergyGauge software. I imported the outputs into a spreadsheet and calculated the normalization factors and presented the results of the energy study to the invested parties in the housing department to comply with their Energy Conservation and Security Regulations.

I co-taught and coordinated a first course with SolidWorks for engineering students. SolidWorks is a parametric 3D computer graphics, and a great design environment for both artists and engineers. The powerful idea is that you can create anything you can imagine.

I created a mathematical model for radial flow from a line source in an infinite cylindrical homogeneous reservoir to calculate the time dependence and spatial extent of elevated pressure in a subsurface formation due to brine injection. I calculated the wellhead pressure and the fracture pressure in the formation to compare with the minimum in-situ stress to avoid hydraulic fracturing.

I developed a syllabus, designed course materials, and created content for a collaborative classroom environment, learning by understanding and peer mentoring, not by memorization. I instructed, tutored online, created software for self-assessment quizzes, generated tests, and assigned grades for Introduction to Engineering, College Algebra, and Mathematics classes. I related stories from my experience, and solicited stories from students on their experiences and their needs to solve mathematical problems.
