Jan 2020 - Present

Healthcare Science Programme Director

Edinburgh Uk

I am currently the professional lead for Healthcare Science at NHS Education for Scotland (NES), responsible for: 1) resource allocation and commissioning of national postgraduate scientist training; 2) quality management of postgraduate specialty training in Healthcare Science; 3) CPD programmes and our national events. I contribute to UK-level engagements on behalf of NHS Scotland’s scientist training programmes. Our purpose is to ensure that trainees get the best possible training experience in readiness for work as scientists in NHS Scotland. I am a member of the UK-level Academy for Healthcare Science Regulation Council – a UK-level board of eight – overseeing public protection for this NHS workforce.Prior to joining NES I was seconded from the NHS to the Scottish Government’s Health Department, where I led publication of Scotland’s first NHS Healthcare Science Action Plan. I worked with UK Government policy colleagues on the formulation of new training pathways for NHS Scientists. Science’s role in healthcare is both essential as it is fascinating; it is a privilege to hold and have held these appointments. I am a registered Clinical Scientist, a Chartered Engineer and a member of the Institute for Physics and Engineering in Medicine. I underwent Kings Fund Senior Leadership Development in 2009/10. Prior to my current national role, my NHS career spans 20 years in rehabilitation engineering and and medical physics roles across Scotland, which included the acquisition of a PhD. I have had a short teaching sabbatical in West Africa, and have also worked in the oil industry as a research engineer. I have had experience in Board-level debate where views are contested, the corporate functions necessary to secure the best interests of an organisation, in quality systems development, the commercial exploitation of NHS ideas and of research in a clinical environment..
