Profile bio

About Robert Featherstone

I am a dedicated researcher in Translational Psychiatry with a strong background in in-vivo electrophysiology, behavioral neuroscience and psychopharmacology, culminating in 40 published manuscripts in leading scientific journals. My work has involved the development of electrophysiological biomarkers for psychiatric drug discovery using EEG and event-related potential recording (ERP) techniques in rodents. I began this work at Sanofi-Aventis and have continued in academia, where I had the opportunity to manage several research collaborations with industry partners. I also have extensive background in research focused on long-term negative consequences of exposure to drugs of abuse (Amphetamine, Ketamine) on cognition and brain function. Most recently I have gained experience leading a clinical research project through the Master of Science in Clinical, Biomedical and Translational Investigations program at USC. I am currently an Assistant Professor.

Listed skills include Mouse And Rat Eeg, Rodent Operant Training, Rodent Cognition Models, Animal Models Of Schizophrenia, and 27 others.

Developmental Neuroscience, Neuroscience. Key Accomplishments: Completed a Master’s degree in Clinical, Biomedical and Translational Investigations. Completed a Mentored Career Development in Clinical and Translational Science (MCN-CTS) Award (KL2). This involved the development and completion of a research project focused on the role of Adverse Childhood Events (ACEs) in treatment refractory depression in a low income Latinx population. Data from this project were presented at the 2022 Anxiety and Depression Association Conference. Published 8 manuscripts in leading international scientific journals, including a review article focused on the usefulness of mismatch negativity as a biomarker for schizophrenia.

Research Associate

Los Angeles, Ca, Us

Duties: Development of novel small rodent surgery procedures, development of rodent behavioral paradigms and analyses, histology and immunohistochemistry, oversaw development of novel stimulus preparations and analysis methods (MMN, ERP) for preclinical translational models for schizophrenia, depression and autism, obtained experience in Spike 2, EEGLAB and MATLAB, obtained extensive experience in grant and manuscript preparation, Pre-clinical and clinical research project management: experimental design, team management, data analysis. Accomplishments included successfully obtaining research support as a principal investigator from industry sources, served as a Co-Investigator on an NIDA grant, published several scientific manuscripts in leading journals.

Jan 2017 - Jul 2018

Scientist

Philadelphia, Pa, Us

I was employed as a faculty member in the Translational Neuroscience Program at the University of Pennsylvania. My research focused on the development of rodent translational biomarkers for psychiatric disease, using EEG measures (mismatch negativity, gamma oscillations) and behavioral/cognitive measures (sustained attention, progressive ratio). I used these techniques to help further our understanding of how changes in GABA, nicotine and glutamate neurotransmitter systems contribute to the development of illnesses such as schizophrenia, autism and depression, both as part of NIH supported projects and collaborative projects with pharmaceutical industry partners.

Aug 2009 - Nov 2016

Post Doctoral Fellow

Paris, France, Fr

During my tenure at Sanofi Aventis I helped to establish and validate rodent EEG methods for use as biomarkers for drug development in psychiatric illness.

Jan 2008 - Jul 2009
