Project Start-up: Pioneering a pilot underground mine project within the Kafubu Emerald Deposit, which has been traditionally and historically, only been open pit mining due to the complex geology, physical and geotechnical challenges/unknowns.• Feasibility Study Report to achieve Mines Safety Department (MSD) acceptance and approval• Environmental Project Brief (EPB) compilation for Zambia Environmental and Management Agency (ZEMA) acceptance and approval• Detailed in-house costing report to achieve Gemfields and Kagem Board approval• Zambian Labour Contractor appointment and management thereof; and managed procurement for the project from South Africa• Managed site preparation, man-power planning and appointmentsProject Description: Site location chosen following a thorough geological investigation, including ore body understanding and projection; communication and management crucial as project lies within a pit alongside an operating opencast operation; surface shaft construction and development including mining services (compressed air, electricity, water and de-watering lines), monorope haulage installation and use; over 950m (of shaft, drive and cross-cut development) with second access (adit) development completed, and testing of small stoping areas (techniques). An initial start-up budget of US$2.2M; production and contamination monitoring and management; management of a team of 20 individuals; quarterly/annual reports and reviews; and strategic input and advice into the project and main operation’s open pit.
