Robert Guinn is the CEO of AppTree Software. He has 25 years experience in enterprise software and is passionate about solving the problem of complexity in the product lifecycle of enterprise systems.Robert was first exposed to complex systems while enlisted in the US Army as a Pershing Nuclear Missile crew member stationed in Western Europe. He became fascinated with security, maintenance of critical systems and the interaction between technology and humans. During his time in Europe, disarmament treaties called for the dismantling of these weapons and Robert was able to participate in and learn about large-scale organizational and strategic change.After discharging his duties in the Army, Robert moved to San Francisco and used a military enlistment bonus that he’d saved to start his first company, in 1991, which he ran successfully for over 20 years. This company provided data analysis and systems integration services. Robert built on that foundation and passion for enterprise software and complex systems and has brought that expertise to his current role as co-founder and CEO of AppTree Software.Robert has been an avid sailor, sailing in the challenging waters off San Francisco, the Sea of Cortez, Caribbean and the South Pacific. He holds a pilot’s license and has flown single engine airplanes all over the US. He’s learned valuable lessons in managing risk, and how to handle high-stakes crisis in these endeavors. In 2005, he relocated from San Francisco to a ranch in the Cascade Mountains of Northern California to experiment with sustainable living. During this time, he met his co-founder Matthew Smith and together they founded AppTree Software in 2012.After a period of initial traction and growth, the founders decided to relocate to a metro area to gain access to more engineering talent for AppTree. Matt and Rob chose Portland Oregon, which is now the home to AppTree Software, taking full advantage of Portland’s growing tech community.
