As a lab aide I started out working in the Biochemistry lab. I was responsible for the receipt, triage and preanalytical processing of all patient samples that arrived in the lab. I also was responsiblefor keeping track of and preparing many of the QC and calibration materials for the main analysers.I moved onto the busy Dispatch lab after this where I was tasked with performing all preanalytics required for referring samples for testing in other labs both in Ireland and abroad… Show more As a lab aide I started out working in the Biochemistry lab. This role required a lot of multi-tasking as I needed to juggle preanalytics with the need to prepare batches to go out with the various couriers that came throughout the day. This included the need to quickly identify samples that required urgent processing.I then moved into the Metabolic laboratory where I was first trained up in the Organic Acid Extraction assay. While working in this area I was responsible for preparing and processing samples for both qualitative and quantitative analysis using GC/MS analysers which included performing daily and weekly maintenance on said analysers. I also had to keep track of, prepare and validate all QC and internal standards related to the assays. After this I moved on to sample analysis using a Roche Cobas analyser. My duties encompassed all elements of running this analyser including all daily, weekly, monthly maintenance procedures and preforming daily calibration and QC checks for all of the assays ran on it. I also took part in the validation of a new assay by preparing and running the various linearity and precision studies required. I was also responsible for the daily preparation of blood spot cards to be analysed using a Tandem MS analyser.I then moved back into the Dispatch lab on a more permanent basis as my experience and multi-tasking abilities became vital in getting through a massive workload increase.Due to my being trained in 3 labs I was frequently required to work where I was needed, when I wasneeded at a moments notice. I was promoted to a Senior MLA in charge of the Prep Lab after showing great initiative and leadership abilities in the wake of the former Prep Lab supervisor leaving the position. In this role I am in charge of the day to day running of the Lab, making sure that all the processes involved in the processing of samples are running at peak efficiency and creating new more efficient processes. My duties include; Being responsible for writing and maintaining SOPs and training guides for processes relating to my area, the training of new staff and assigning work to the other Prep Lab staff, keeping track of monthly and quarterly Quality Indicators for my staff and area and reporting these indicators to my manager, resolving discrepancies that are found during sample receipt and triaging, organizing the maintenance and calibration of all equipment and machinery in my area. It was my primary responsibility to receive samples from the National Cervical Screening Program and to ensure that these samples were triaged, booked onto the LIMS, processed and stained to the highest level of quality.
