Profile bio

About Robert Hewis

I hold an MA in Design History, Decorative Arts, and Material Culture, with a curatorial interest in cultural interchanges between the Islamicate World and Europe in the early modern period. I am an extremely enthusiastic and diligent student, and am the 2024 recipient of the Clive Wainwright Award for an Outstanding Qualifying Paper. Throughout my studies I have critically engaged with key issues in the field of collecting and curation. I led a research project investigating the collection and display of medieval textiles in the collections of the University of Cambridge in the summer of 2021, and I have taken classes at the Metropolitan Museum of Art which have introduced me to contemporary discourses of ethical curating, as well as crucial exhibition software such as TMS.I have always been a keen but compassionate leader in all my roles. As an undergraduate, I was LGBTQ+ Officer on the student union of King's College, Cambridge, organising and publicising events that created safe and fun spaces for the queer community of the college. I also founded a queer multimedia magazine at Cambridge called "Screeve," which is Polari for "writing," which published its debut print issue in 2022 and which continues to operate as a queer-owned society.I am also a bubbly and personable team-player, who is motivated to connect my academic research to as broad an audience as possible through public engagement. I have co-curated two temporary exhibitions in upstate New York in the summer of 2023. During my undergraduate studies, I volunteered as a tour guide at David Parr House, a Lottery-funded heritage site in Cambridge, and I have worked for two years in the Bard Graduate Center Gallery as a gallery educator and content producer. In this role I both craft and deliver insightful tours of temporary exhibition, as well as edit the YouTube content of Bard Graduate Center's public programmes. I have developed excellent video and audio editing skills as well as project management experience.
