The Structural Geology Research Group in Durham (formerly known as the Reactivation Research Group) carries out research that aims to characterise the spatial, temporal and rheological evolution of faults and shear zones and to better understand their underlying controls and economic importance. This is achieved through integrated field- and laboratory-based studies spanning 6 overlapping scientific themes: i) Reactivation tectonics in continental margins and interiors; ii) Weakening mechanisms along crustal-scale faults; iii) Quantifying the influence of reactivation on fracture attributes & development; iv) Deformation patterns in transpression-transtension zones; v) Flow kinematics in crustal and mantle deformation zones; vi) Digital acquisition and visualisation of geological field data using GPS/GIS and terrestrial laser scanning. Field study areas: Scotland, Greenland, Newfoundland, Brazil, Cyprus, California, Norway, Shetland, Faroe Islands, England, Italy, Japan, Vietnam, Middle East.
