I am a specialist Mental Health Act Hospital Manager and also undertake the additional role of Chair. I have completed comprehensive legal, moral and ethical training to carry out this function, and this training remains ongoing. I make up a panel of three specialist independent lay members who hear appeals, reviews, renewals and barring orders to determine whether patients sectioned under the Mental Health Act (1983), should remain liable to detention or have their Community Treatment Order lifted. This role involves reading complex medical reports produced by the Responsible Clinician, Nurse and Social Worker, meeting with the authors to question them on any issues that arise from their reports or arise during the hearing. Having heard all parties and taking into consideration the written evidence I then make an independent decision which contributes to the legally binding decision of the panel. I pride myself in being one of the youngest appointed Chairs for hearings, given NTW Trust is the largest Mental Health provider in Europe. As Chair I am responsible for leading and controlling the hearing, making sure the patient is at the centre, the panel focus on the patient and the patient's wishes and views are heard, discussed and taken into account. This also encompasses producing the report which details the decision and reasons for it in a language the patient can clearly understand. These meetings are multiagency and to ensure natural justice as Chair it is my role to ensure that all parties have the opportunity to present their views and for these views to be challenged where appropriate.

My role involved communication with a wide and diverse range of clinical, non-clinical and international partners.I was required to do a significant amount of research due to the challenges of working across two countries, especially as one is developing. The research included horizon scanning for development opportunities, changes in legislation, country health statistics and the ever-changing political landscape to name just a few, I analyse the data before discussing my recommendations with the Head of the International, to determine future courses of action.Northumbria's international programme has a number of wide-ranging projects from community outreach to burns treatment and prevention. I have an in-depth knowledge of them all, in order to provide detailed reports to our Charitable Funds Committee who provide financial support and hold discussions with external stakeholders who are potentially interested in sponsoring the programme in the future. In this post, I have travelled to KCMC on a number of occasions. Before a team departed I drafted the pre-visit budget, taking into consideration potential contingency and security fund requirements. A fundamental aspect of my role is the development of professional and personal relationships. While working in Tanzania I am part of a larger multidisciplinary team with staff members ranging from senior clinicians, to junior doctors, nurses and administrative staff working to help develop a sustainable and effective healthcare service. In Tanzania and in the UK i regularly attended and contribute to service development meetings with the Heads of department, Matrons and KCMC's chief executive via zoom video conferencing facilities. I worked closely with the communications team to ensure the Trust's reputation and our international programme was well highlighted across a variety of platforms.
